Madrid Mobility 360 - Madrid

City / Region

Madrid (Spain)

In a nutshell

Madrid Mobility 360 offers a unique fully functional MaaS (Mobility as a Service) solution, including booking, unlocking and payments. Madrid Mobility 360 is an innovative solution that goes beyond the already powerful MPlanner, the route planner of Madrid Mobility 360. The service is a world first in this type of tool, offering users information on bus occupancy.

Through an intuitive colour code and a message about the estimated level of busyness, the user obtains information about bus occupancy in the trip segment of the specific calculated route, both while calculating a route and while waiting at the bus stop. This feature, unprecedented in this type of application until now, is especially relevant in helping users to make more conscious and free mobility decisions, and positions Madrid at the forefront of digital mobility.

Madrid Mobility 360 brings together different options from the Madrid mobility ecosystem and allows the user to identify the wide range of mobility solutions available in the city on the same map. The application offers information on the main public transport operators, such as EMT urban buses, metro, light metro, suburban train and intercity buses. It also includes the many existing shared mobility options such as bicycles from BiciMAD (station based) or BiciMAD Go (freefloating), scooters, cars and motorcycles.

Now, more than ever, the promotion of sustainable mobility means offering a smart mobility experience, that is, one that is digital and innovative, and provides the user with efficient alternatives to make their journeys easily and smoothly. Thanks to the technology, we can offer, in real time, mobility solutions with a high degree of information to help the madrileños maintain a sustainable mobility experience that meets their expectations.

What makes the service user-centric?
Madrid Mability 360 offers an app, available for Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=es.emtmadrid.mobility360) and iOS (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/madrid-mobility-360/id1540600891), that let the citizen a complete digital interaction in order to get the best route for its trip.

Madrid Mobility 360 has been developed with accessibility, security, availability, usability, protection of personal data and privacy in mind. It offers, beyond the common benefits of a MAAS platform, a simple and transparent model for the mobility market – a highly dynamic and permanently in evolution ecosystem- to citizens.

Thanks to its two main components: MRoute (the route planner) and MPass (the payment platform), Madrid Mobility 360 has been designed to respond the mobility market needs reducing complexity and offering a completely digital experience to the citizens. Thus incentivising the use of the solution and maximising citizen engagement.

Madrid Mobility 360 powerful and innovative route calculator, called MPlanner, has involved a significant effort in technological development and algorithmic optimisation to offer the citizen a differential experience. The application allows the calculation of intermodal routes, integrating all the available options and optimising the routes according to their economic cost or trip time. It also takes into account some user parameters, such as their preference for walking or for using any mode of transport over the others.

Madrid Mobility 360 also reports the estimated CO2 emissions generated by the trip in order to improve public awareness and sustainability. This way, the citizen can participate and lead the process of making Madrid a greener and more sustainable city.
What impact has the service had?
The Madrid 360 Environmental Sustainability Strategy is aligned with the objectives set by the European Union to promote and lead a new, sustainable and connected urban mobility and with the fulfilment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Madrid Mobility 360 provides information about bus occupancy in the trip segment of the specific calculated route. The occupancy, shown by 25% jumps is not merely descriptive. In the event that the planned route includes a high occupancy section, the tool offers the user two alternative options: a second route at the same time frame with a lower occupancy, and the same route at a later time with a lower occupancy. This feature allows users who wish to do so to plan their journeys while taking into account this kind of service data, and to have the necessary information to modify their demand for the service, either temporally or spatially.

Thus, a user waiting at the bus stop will have the information to decide whether to take the next bus or, conversely, to wait, if this decision gives any additional advantage, such as getting a free seat.

Information on occupancy is available for all EMT's bus routes and is determined by means of a predictive statistical model that uses both passenger boarding validation data and information provided by sensors installed on the buses. These sensors are currently installed in the entire fleet.

Beyond numbers on the impact of this service, almost 24k downloads and more than 10k users in 2021, the city of Madrid is a leading model in public transport, and an attractive setting for the implementation of new mobility solutions. Large-capacity public transport continues to be the backbone of urban mobility, while other alternatives are emerging to complement it and to provide to users multiple possibilities, building a wide, varied and multimodal offer.

EMT Madrid, the Municipal Transport Company of Madrid, is the responsible of Madrid Mobility 360, being this iniciative its most ambitious commitment after years of experience and innovation in this field. In 2018, EMT launched the “MaaS Madrid” application, which was a first exercise in database integration for visualisation.
Madrid Mobility 360 represents the consolidation and optimisation of previous experiences in integration to provide a comprehensive response to the citizen with features that have never been developed before.

Now, more than ever, the promotion of sustainable mobility means offering a smart mobility experience, that is, one that is digital and innovative, and provides the user with efficient alternatives to make their journeys easily and smoothly.

Thanks to the technology, we can offer, in real time, mobility solutions with a high degree of information to help the citizen maintaining a sustainable mobility experience that meets their expectations.
How was the service co-created?
Madrid Mobility 360 integrates information provided by different organizations, public and private, including shared mobility services without a fixed base, or free floating: this is a major innovation in the planners' framework.

Provides the user with information on bus occupancy levels. This functionality is in line with the objective of flattening the public transport rush hour (COVID-19). Pay and validate the single bus ticket via QR. Also, use BiciMAD and BiciMAD go.
Integrate the public parking service: consult available parking spaces in real time and have information on Smart park and park-and-ride car parks.

Incorporation of means of payment and access, such as a transport card or car registration number, allows citizens to take advantage of parking services and, for example, the associated "park & ride" discounts already active.

It is thus an excellent example of co-creation based on the collaboration of different public and private actors and their interoperable data.
