MijnRotterdam (MyRotterdam) - Rotterdam

City / Region

Rotterdam (Netherlands)

In a nutshell

"What's going on ... in my neighbourhood?"(Ghostbusters)

MijnRotterdam is the digital neighbourhood meeting place where Rotterdammers (citizens of Rotterdam) can participate, discuss and decide what is important for them. This platform is designed to give residents more influence over their own neighbourhood. For example, people can look up which projects are being worked on in their neighbourhood. By indicating their areas of interest and favourite places in the city, they only get to see what is relevant to them. Simple and tailor-made.

The platform is where digital participation is set up and co-created and where interaction is organised together with the residents in the field of policy development and neighbourhoods’ projects.

In the coming years we will further expand the platform. Keep an eye out for MijnRotterdam for the latest developments.

What makes the service user-centric?
The development of MijnRotterdam took place with the direct support and input from residents. The project team was open to all kinds of suggestions and organised many feedback sessions and organised many feedback meetings to validate the platform-to-be amongst the end users.

MijnRotterdam is operational since the second half of 2021 and digital inclusion and participation are its central focus. It offers users the connection with various projects and initiatives throughout the local neighbourhoods and Rotterdam as a whole, e.g. through our Digital City (digital twin).

Mijn Rotterdam is created due to the necessity of giving residents more effective control in policy- and decision making at level of the municipality. Furthermore, it creates an overall view of all projects in a single digital space. This makes it easier for Rotterdammers to see which projects they can physically and digitally participate in. The advantage is that the inhabitants of Rotterdam can see their neighbours’ opinions as well as other important community matters.

Each project within MijnRotterdam guides Rotterdammers with a timeline, several possibilities to express propositions, opinions, and comments, and so on. So, the steps to be taken by users, are designed around those users and their expectations. MijnRotterdam is action-driven: “What is the next step that I can take? How can I own my neighbourhood?”, and therefore connects with the user context.
What impact has the service had?
The impact is that Rotterdammers will be more involved in the development of their neighbourhoods, participation will increase and the sense of ownership of their surroundings will be stronger as well.

This is realised by getting the residents' opinions and ideas and informing them about the local projects. The platform offers various tools in order to do so:
- Polls, with which you can directly collect the opinion of residents about your plan.
- Presenting a proposition or question to residents to collect their reactions (for, against, comments and arguments).
- Ideation, create an idea form with which you can collect plans and ideas.
- Voting/Liking. Measure the support or idea for a plan instantly.
- GemeentePeiler. Conduct brief polls to find out what is people's minds. On the project page you can place the QR code for the mobile poll.
- Create news items with a picture to keep residents up to date with the latest news.
- Share a link of a digital meeting you organize.
- Apply for subsidies for neighbourhood' projects.
How was the service co-created?
The name itself was selected through a local contest. This makes MijnRotterdam even more for, of and by the people that use it. The name itself emphasizes the fact that the platform is really used for and by Rotterdammers. Furthermore, our User eXperience lab (UX-lab) carried out moderated user tests together with both colleagues within the municipality as with Rotterdammers via the project team itself. This way, the end users were involved in the creation of the service.

Mijn Rotterdam is an organic instrument which keeps on evolving in an iterative process. Always keeping the growing needs of Rotterdammers in mind. Participation tools and new features will be added to the platform continuously. In order to keep up with the needs of the Rotterdammers.
